Insurance & Home Inventory Preparedness Checklist
Questions and documentation to review before wildfire season without assuming what any policy covers.Review the policy
- Confirm the dwelling limit and ask how the insurer estimates current rebuilding cost.
- Review limits for detached structures, personal property, and additional living expense or loss of use.
- Understand deductibles, exclusions, and any special limits for valuable items.
- Renters: review personal-property and additional-living-expense coverage.
- Vehicles: ask whether comprehensive coverage applies to fire, smoke, or ash damage.
- Save the insurer's claim number and your agent's contact information offline.
Build the inventory
- Photograph or video every room, closet, cabinet, garage, shed, and major outdoor item.
- Capture serial numbers, models, approximate age, and receipts for important items where practical.
- Store a copy securely away from the property and make sure another household member can access it.
- Update the inventory after major purchases or home improvements.
Important limits
- Coverage depends on the policy, endorsements, limits, deductibles, cause of loss, and insurer.
- Mitigation reduces physical risk but does not guarantee eligibility, a lower premium, or a discount.
- Ask the insurer how documented defensible space or home hardening affects its own underwriting.
