Pets & Livestock Evacuation Checklist
A practical animal plan for identification, supplies, transport, early relocation, and shelter.Every animal
- Keep current identification, a recent photo, vaccination records, and veterinary contacts together.
- Pack food, water, medications, bowls, sanitation supplies, and familiar bedding.
- Identify more than one safe destination that accepts your type and number of animals.
- Include animals in every evacuation drill and leave early when transport will take extra time.
Household pets
- Use a labeled carrier for each small animal and keep leashes or harnesses at the exit.
- Practice loading nervous pets before an emergency.
- Plan for pet-friendly lodging or friends outside the hazard area; standard shelters may have limits.
Horses and livestock
- Arrange enough trailers, drivers, halters, and loading help before fire season.
- Practice loading and map routes that can handle the trailer.
- Identify fairgrounds, boarding facilities, or other approved shelter locations in advance.
- Move large animals during an early warning when officials recommend it; loading takes time and roads may close.
- Keep feed, buckets, medical supplies, wire cutters, and animal records ready to load.
